Here are<strong> tips from Dr Sriniwas Thakur, Consultant Geriatrician<\/strong>, on what you should and shouldn&#8217;t do when some elderly person suffers from a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Heart attacks: risk factors and reported symptoms<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30917\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack.png\" alt=\"Heart attack elderly people\" width=\"319\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack.png 600w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack-271x300.png 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/>There are risk factors for heart attacks in elderly<\/strong>, such as family history of heart attacks or cardiac problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being overweight or obese<\/li>\n<li>Inactive or sedentary lifestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Commonly reported symptoms of heart attack include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uncomfortable chest pain, heavy pressure or squeezing or sensation of fullness in chest, with pain radiating to neck, jaw and arm<\/li>\n<li>Indigestion or heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Nausea, vomiting, sudden sweating or dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Fatigued and noticeable decrease in energy<\/li>\n<li>In some cases, acute change in behaviour (delirium).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Steps to reduce heart attacks<\/h2>\n<p>There are some ways to reduce heart attack risks. Indeed, first, it is important for people of all ages<strong> to eat a healthy diet:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If suffering from high blood pressure, they should have a diet low in salts and pickles; consume less oily and fried foods.<\/li>\n<li>If diabetic, diet should be low in sugars and consume foods with low glycemic index. It is always a good option to consume fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables and avoid all sorts of junk food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30918\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack-1.jpg\" alt=\"Heart attack\" width=\"319\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Heart-attack-1-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/>Secondly, senior citizens who have been sedentary <strong>should start exercising slowly, by taking short walks every day. <\/strong>Moreover, one of the most preventable causes of heart attacks is smoking. It is always better<strong> to quit smoking at any age.<\/strong> Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude, keep your Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Cholesterol in good control and try and lead a stress-free life; visit your doctor on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<h2>An elderly person has a heart attack in front of me: what can I do?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Have that person sit down, rest and try to keep calm<\/li>\n<li>Loosen any tight clothing<\/li>\n<li>Keep constantly reassuring them that medical aid is on its way<\/li>\n<li>If the person takes any medication for chest pain or heart condition, help them take it<\/li>\n<li>Call for help and immediately, take the person to the hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What not to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not leave the person alone, except to call for help<\/li>\n<li>Do not give anything by mouth, unless a heart medication is prescribed<\/li>\n<li>Do not wait to see if the symptoms go away.
