being released<\/strong>, according to new government figures.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30504 aligncenter\" (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Elderly criminals more likely to be sent back to jail than young people<\/h2>\n<p>Poverty is thought to be a key factor fuelling the surge in so-called &#8220;silver crimes&#8221; committed by Japan\u2019s elderly people, and is one particularly negative side effect of the rapid pace at which its society is aging.<\/p>\n<p>The annual white paper on crime, published by the Justice Ministry, found that<strong> elderly criminals were more likely to be sent back to jail than their younger counterparts.\u00a0<\/strong>Indeed, more than 23 per cent of over-65s reoffend within two years, compared to just 11 per cent of those under 29.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30505 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Jail-2.jpg\" alt=\"Jail\" width=\"287\" height=\"383\" (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/>Moreover, <strong>the number of imprisoned Japanese seniors also quadrupled since 1997 to 2,498 last year<\/strong>, accounting for more than 12 per cent of all account for 27.7 percent of population<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>A rise in &#8220;silver crime&#8221; which goes hand in hand with Japan\u2019s fast ageing society<\/h2>\n<p>The most common reasons for imprisonment among elderly convicts were petty crimes such as shoplifting and theft, reflecting the financial hardships facing a growing swathe of Japan\u2019s elderly population.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rise in &#8220;silver crime&#8221; goes hand in hand with <a title=\"Japan : local shops adapt to ageing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/japan-local-shops-adapt-to-ageing\/\">Japan\u2019s fast ageing society<\/a><\/strong>, with the nation on track to soon become the world\u2019s first &#8220;ultra aged&#8221; country, defined by 28 per cent of a population being over-65.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is currently home to a population of 127 million, 27.3 per cent of which is over the age of 65.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Poverty of ageing Japanese population fuelling \u2018silver
