{"id":30447,"date":"2017-11-03T14:37:13","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T13:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/?p=30447"},"modified":"2026-01-22T13:49:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:49:22","slug":"yoga-reduces-falls-among-the-elderly-a-study-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/yoga-reduces-falls-among-the-elderly-a-study-suggests\/","title":{"rendered":"Yoga reduces falls among the elderly, a study suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison professor of family medicine <strong>Irene Hamrick<\/strong> reports that <strong>the number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/infographics-falls-management-in-care-homes-a-major-challenge\/\">falls<\/a> in older adults dropped 48 percent in the 6 months after a yoga class began<\/strong>, compared to the 6 months previous.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0965229917302698\">a study, now online in Complementary Therapies in Medicine<\/a>, looked at older, rural adults who attended yoga classes in Western Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30449 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-2.jpg\" alt=\"Well-being - Yoga\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Yoga classes would reduce self-reported falls and improve balance measures<\/h2>\n<p>Among people aged 65 and up, <strong>falls are the leading cause of injury death<\/strong>, and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital trauma admissions.<strong>\u00a030 percent of this age group has a fall each year<\/strong> and the rate rises to 50 percent by age 80.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30450\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-1.jpg\" alt=\"Well-being - Yoga\" width=\"368\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Well-being-Yoga-1-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/>The average participant in this study was 70 years old, well within the risk zone. In the 6 months before the yoga classes began, 15 participants reported 27 falls.<strong> In the 6 months following the start of classes, 13 people reported 14 falls, a statistically significant reduction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All participants took twice-weekly yoga classes for 8 weeks, and were assigned to do 5 minutes of meditation at home; half were also randomly assigned to add in 10 minutes of yoga to the meditation. You are stable, in control.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The study design did not make it easy to isolate yoga poses from meditation. Hamrick says <strong>the effect of meditation alone on reducing falls has apparently not been studied.<\/strong> <em>\u201cIt could be worth looking into, comparing meditation alone to yoga or balance exercises, but it\u2019s hard to know what would be the practical impact.
