{"id":28594,"date":"2016-12-14T15:13:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T14:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/?p=28594"},"modified":"2026-01-22T13:49:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:49:45","slug":"health-at-a-glance-europe-2016-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/health-at-a-glance-europe-2016-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Health at a Glance: Europe 2016 report: State of health in th EU cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Health-at-a-Glance_EUROPE-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Health at a Glance: Europe 2016<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>European Commission\/OECD<\/strong> joint report shows that policies that aim at promoting good health and preventing diseases as well as reduce healthcare inequalities between EU members.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Health at a Glance: Europe 2016<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28596\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28596\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28596\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/healthcare.png\" alt=\"study healthcare in Europe\" width=\"248\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/healthcare.png 449w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/healthcare-227x300.png 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Report&#8217;s cover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Health at a Glance: Europe 2016<\/em>, the European Commission\/OECD joint report, was published on November 2016 and it presents <strong>the most recent trends on health and health systems across the 28 EU member states, 5 candidate countries and 3 European Free Trade Association countries.<\/strong> It is main objective is to improve country-specific and EU-wide knowledge on health issues as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/health\/state\" target=\"_blank\">Commission\u2019s new State of Health in the EU cycle.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/the-life-expectancy-of-men-exceeds-80-years-old-in-japan\/\">Life expectancy<\/a> now exceeds 80 years in most EU countries.<br \/>\nAcross the EU the share of the population over 65 has increased from less than 10% in 1960 to nearly 20% in 2015 and is projected to increase to nearly 30% by 2060. As Europe is ageing, combined with increasing rates of chronic diseases and budgetary constraints, healthcare system will require changes, and mostly by developing eHealth.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/health-at-a-glance-europe-2016-infographics\/\"><em>Read more :\u00a0Health at a glance: Europe 2016 infographics<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Europeans live longer, but not particularly in good health<\/h2>\n<p>However, <strong>this record-high life expectancy is not always synonym with a healthy living.<\/strong> Around 50 million people in the EU suffer from several chronic diseases, and more than half a million people of working age die from them every year, representing an annual cost of some 115 billion EUR for EU economies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, health spending accounted for 9.9% of GDP in the EU as a whole, up from 8.7% in 2005. In all countries, the health spending share of GDP is projected to increase in the coming years due mainly to population ageing and premature deaths from chronic diseases. It shows that in the EU many people die every year from potentially avoidable diseases linked to risk factors such as smoking or obesity. It also highlights the need to continue our efforts in making sure that healthcare becomes more accessible. The report represents the flagship of the partnership between the Commission and the OECD to develop country-specific and cross-country knowledge on health and health systems, as the first step of the &#8216;State of Health in the EU&#8217;.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD-300x72.png\" alt=\"logo-oecd\" width=\"249\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD-300x72.png 300w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD-768x184.png 768w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD-1024x246.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD-600x144.png 600w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/logo-OECD.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><strong>Angel Gurr\u00eda<\/strong>, Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), added: <em>\u201cMany more lives could be saved if the standards of care were raised to the best level across EU countries. More needs to be done to reduce inequalities in access and quality of care, and European health systems must become more efficient in channelling resources where they have the most impact on health
