Thus migrant workers, mainly young adults who leave rural areas by the millions\u00a0to find work in some of China&#8217;s biggest cities, are not allowed to bring their family and spouse along, leaving a trail of <strong>&#8220;left behind&#8221; elders and children with no options but to try and fend for themselves<\/strong> ; poverty and isolation drive some of them to suicide, as exemplified by the death\u00a0of four Chinese\u00a0children in the\u00a0southwestern province of Guizhou.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elders are particularly affected by this phenomenon, according to Chinese demographer and Wuhan University teacher Liu Yanwu, who claims that elderly suicide has been increasing steadily since 1990. \u00a0He set out on a 400-day study through 40 villages located across 11 provinces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The elderly have been committing suicide at a sharp rate of increase since 1990, he says. Some of his fieldwork took place in Jingshan, a county of Hubei province, in central China, where an estimated 30% seniors commit suicide. An alarming trend confirmed by locals, who said\u00a0that &#8220;<em>none of the elderly die of natural causes.&#8221;<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28257 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/China-senior.jpg\" alt=\"China senior\" width=\"287\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/China-senior.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/China-senior-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Liu,\u00a0suicide has come to be seen as a normal way to go, especially among those in poor health. While &#8220;<em>China&#8217;s overall suicide rate is declining<\/em>&#8220;, elders increasingly consider this option the &#8220;<em>unique way of coping with the pain of an ageing modern society<\/em>&#8220;, he observed.<\/p>\n<h2>Rekindling filial piety, a useless endeavour ?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a bid to protect its <a title=\"In China, elderly people represent 15.5% of the population\" href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/in-china-elderly-people-represent-15-5-of-the-population\/3126832\">increasing elderly population<\/a> from neglect and isolation, the Chinese\u00a0government has been aiming at rekindling filial piety and soothe <a title=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/intergenerational-conflicts-sometimes-the-young-and-the-elderly-fight-in-buses-in-china\/3124636\" href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/intergenerational-conflicts-sometimes-the-young-and-the-elderly-fight-in-buses-in-china\/3124636\">intergenerational conflicts<\/a>. It started in the 1990s with The Top Ten Virtuous Sons and Daughters&#8221;, a program rewarding the most virtuous sons and daughters across all Chinese provinces. In 2013, the Elderly Rights law was passed, forcing children to visit their elderly parents no matter how far they live from them. The upward trend of elderly suicide\u00a0seems to indicate that those measures\u00a0failed to address the issue at stake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last couple of decades, elderly suicide has been on the rise in China.
