In 2014, a survey conducted by Statistics Korea revealed that <strong>elderly people were 1.4 to 2.9 times as likely to end their days as\u00a0other demographic groups in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A recent study, conducted by a Yonsei University research team led by Professor Nam Seok-in, examined the relation between perceptions of class and suicidal thoughts. It was published on the 4th of August, in the latest issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kihasa.re.kr\/\"><em>Health and Social Welfare Review,<\/em><\/a> a South Korean publication exploring issues related to national health and social security systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The study used data collected during a survey conducted by the Korean Health and Welfare Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Out of 1\u00a0916 participants aged 65 and above, 103 reported having suicidal thoughts over the last years, accounting for 5.4% of all participants. \u201c<em><strong>It means that over one in twenty have thought about killing themselves<\/strong>, which indicates that suicidal impulses should be seen as a substantial, universal issue rather than something found in a small minority of exceptional cases among senior citizens<\/em>\u201d, Professor Nam said.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27601 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Korean-senior.jpg\" alt=\"Korean senior elderly\" width=\"387\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Korean-senior.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Korean-senior-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Korean-senior-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>South Korean seniors are highly class conscious<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The study revealed that class consciousness is prevalent among seniors:<strong> 83.3% of surveyed seniors felt they belonged to the five lowest categories<\/strong>\u00a0among the ten social categories outlined in the study. This class consciousness seemed to be based more on subjective perceptions of physical and mental health than any objective criteria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those results should be compared to the results of a similar study conducted in the United Kingdom, where <strong>only 36% of men and 38.4% of women<\/strong> felt they belonged to the five lowest classes.<\/p>\n<h2>Many South Korean seniors have low self-esteem and high stress levels<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>14.4% of participants showed signs of high stress levels<\/strong>, while 16.1% described their health as \u201cpoor\u201d or \u201cvery poor\u201d. High stress levels were also associated with negative health perceptions and higher chances of experiencing suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What can be done to remedy this situation\u00a0? According to the authors of the study, \u201c<em>encouraging job programs for the elderly as an active means of income preservation to improve elderly people\u2019s subjective class perceptions<\/em>\u201d should be the first step of a long journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In South Korea, seniors\u2019 suicide spree is one of many ageing-related problems, among which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/in-south-korea-retirement-is-weighing-down-the-economy\/3127584\">retirement funding<\/a>\u00a0features heavily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>\u00a0:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/english.hani.co.kr\/arti\/english_edition\/e_national\/755856.html\">english.hani.co.kr<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One out of twenty Korean seniors report having had some kind of suicidal thoughts over the last years\u00a0;
