The Proportion of the elderly underwent a spectacular increase between 2001 and 2011, rising by 35.5. \u00a0which represents <strong>8.6 percent of the overall population, <\/strong>according to a report by the Indian Ministry of \u00a0Statistics.\u00a0The country&#8217;s economy is now trying to evolve to provide age-appropriate solutions for its growing elderly population, especially in the field of health care, which is less than satisfactory for people living in rural areas.<\/div>\n<div class=\"social-icon-web\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"social-icon-web\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In India as in so many other countries, taking care of the elderly used to be the responsibility of younger family members. At a time when children tend to emigrate to pursue their studies and careers, dependent elders \u00a0find themselves\u00a0increasingly lonely and neglected, with little to no access to proper medical care; these problems all lead the way towards the development of an Indian Silver economy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"comments\">\n<div class=\"icons\">\n<div class=\"social-icon-web\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"social-icon-web\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Startups lead the way for developing the Silver economy in India<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Startups are now at the forefront of innovations aimed at catering to the elderly&#8217;s needs, and helping their caregivers. The ageing of the Indian population now present them with highly lucrative opportunities, allowing them to help elders while keeping business afloat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are called Senior Shelf, Silver Talkies, and BeautifulYears, and they&#8217;re currently shaping the development of the Silver economy in india, in various fields of expertise.<\/p>\n<h3>Senior Shelf, online shopping portal<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27947 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Senior-Shelf-India.png\" alt=\"Senior Shelf India startup population ageing\" width=\"404\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Senior-Shelf-India.png 404w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Senior-Shelf-India-300x63.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Senior Shelf<\/strong> is an online shopping portal specialising in products and services for seniors.\u00a0\u00a0It all started when founder\u00a0Rahul Upadhyay set out to find a blood pressure machine for his parents, foraging during a good four hours before finding the device ; thinking about the lack of accessibility of such items inspired him to create\u00a0an online shop that would provide the elderly with relevant\u00a0products and services. Another important goal is to make those services known to their target audience, as many Indian seniors are not always aware of their existence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Rahul Upadhyay, toilet products are particularly in demand. Falls are a common factor of autonomy loss and even death among the elderly, as bone structures grow more fragile with age. Items such as safety rails are instrumental in making bathrooms safer for seniors. But the portal also focuses on other ways of fostering autonomy: <em>&#8220;We also aggregate other products like wheelchairs, walking sticks, products for bedridden elderly like bed safety railing etc. Among the services offered are <strong>senior care at home, nursing care services and travel packages for the elderly<\/strong> &#8211; all of these are aggregated from third party partner.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Read our report : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/falls-among-elderly-people-detection-advice-and-prevention\/3124749\">Falls among the elderly : detection, advice and prevention<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The startup is now considering opening a non-virtual shop to make its products directly accessible to the elderly, instead of the younger family members who made up their primary targets.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;When we started off, being online, our primary targets were the children of the elderly who are not able to live with their parents, but would still like to support and help them as much as possible regardless of geography. However, we have also discovered a large number of elderly who want to purchase the products for their own consumption &#8211; but are not online enabled hence find it difficult. We come over and suggest <strong>best ways to make your home safe, secure, and comfortable for seniors<\/strong>. We have also created an online forum for people taking care of their parents, to share experiences and to help each other take better care of our seniors. [&#8230;]\u00a0Secondly, we help people find the best services &#8211; be it a physiotherapist, a nurse or an attendant, or a senior living facility. T<strong>he awareness and consciousness is also not there<\/strong>. In that sense, we are a bit ahead of the curve.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the ageing of population might bring with it\u00a0greater awareness of age-related issues, as well as many growth opportunities, particularly regarding the next generation of seniors :\u00a0<em>&#8220;There is a large population of tech savvy retirees coming up in the next 5-7 years &#8211; people who were in 40&#8217;s when the Internet boom happened in late 90&#8217;s and early 2000.<strong> These are a tech savvy, aware generation of retirees<\/strong> who would demand products and services they see available outside India, and that is where I see real growth coming in.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"artText printLiveShow\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vladi Ruppo, from BeautifulYears, also reported that market growth for its products and services stood at an impressive annual rate of 20%.
