Out of all Southeastern<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-27814 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Thailand-elderly-woman-demographic-transition.png\" alt=\"Thailand elderly woman demographic transition\" width=\"257\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Thailand-elderly-woman-demographic-transition.png 423w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Thailand-elderly-woman-demographic-transition-267x300.png 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/> Asian\u00a0countries, envied for their high fertility rates, Thailand is the only one that has to shoulder the financial weight\u00a0of an ageing population. Between 2010 and 2015, <strong>its population growth rate only stood at 0.3 percent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Thai economy already faces the consequences of the demographic change : Thailand&#8217;s labour force growth is <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>mere 0.8 percent per year<\/strong>, in contrast with the Philippines&#8217; (2.4 percent). In other countries, immigration serves to supply national economies with a steady stream of workers to fill in potential gaps in the labour force ; Thailand&#8217;s migration growth, however, is not sufficient for that purpose, while its own citizens tend to emigrate more. Retirement age is also set at age 55, the same as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/in-south-korea-retirement-is-weighing-down-the-economy\/3127584\">South Korea<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>reducing the labour force even further.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fostering seniors&#8217; employment, Thailand&#8217;s bid to take on population ageing<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27801 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Senior-employment.jpg\" alt=\"Senior employment \" width=\"454\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Senior-employment.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Senior-employment-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Senior-employment-600x440.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a bid to alleviate the financial burden of retirement, the Thai government has taken steps towards fostering the employment of seniors. The Thai Labour Ministry plans on <strong>opening job placement centres in August<\/strong> ; they will aim to put job-seeking seniors in contact with prospective employers ; applicants&#8217; profiles will be registered and then compared to the needs of prospective employers. This service happens to match previous requests of companies interested in hiring senior workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a context of widespread discriminating practices against job-seeking seniors, the Thai government also has a plan to make hiring older people more attractive to prospective employers : companies will be offered a <strong>double tax reduction for each position given<\/strong> to people aged 55 and older.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to make hiring senior citizens easier, the Labour Ministry also plans on amending labour laws, including\u00a0labour protection, social security and elderly people&#8217;s welfare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Employing seniors above retirement age is not unheard of : at age 92,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/a-92-year-old-singaporean-woman-working-at-mcdonalds\/3127538\" target=\"_blank\">Goh Gwek Eng, a Singaporean woman<\/a>, stills works at McDonald&#8217;s. In the US, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvereco.org\/en\/usa-the-upward-trend-of-working-seniors\/3127617\">senior citizens&#8217; employment<\/a><\/strong> has gone up by 6% from 2000 to 2016, mostly (but not solely) due to financial hardship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Source : <a
